Navigation Challenge Series
The three races will be started in the following venues (permits forthcoming)
NC1 Barrove
NC2 Shay Elliot
NC3 Glendalough

For the first time all three races will be on the one map.
East / West Glendalough Glenmalure. Regulars should already have this

A word for new comers, these events are on open path less terrain and a good ability to map read is required. They are not suitable for beginners.
A shorter option is available, mainly on tracks but not exclusively.
A lower ability of navigation is required.

Part of IMRA youth safety policy prohibits under 18s undertaking open mountainunmarked routes. Unfortunately this means entry cannot be accepted from U18 for these events. This I'm sure will disappoint junior orienteers who regularly do similiar events. A case of different sports different rules.
Liam VinesSep 19 2024, 8:55pmHi all.
Event page for Nav 2- Shay Elliott has been updated. All the usual suspects will turn up but lets see a few new faces at this event.
Don't be put off by the stories of nightmare 30min K's and and heather up to your ears. We are back to a more beginner level short course. So come and give it a go.
Graham K. BusheSep 20 2024, 9:04amHi Liam, thanks for all the work you have put into this race so far (and all the other races)
Would you have the outer grid references for the map area required on the day please?

That make sense Graham?

Nav 2 is open for entry now...
Graham K. BusheSep 23 2024, 4:58pmThanks Liam
Liam VinesSep 27 2024, 8:16pmA day left to enter.
Its looking like it will be wet on Sunday so make sure to have the right clothes with you for a long day in the mountains. Remember you might not be moving as fast as you would in a marked race so the cold can creep in on you quicker
I wasn’t going to have an early start but if someone really wants to do the long course and are worried about time let me know and we will sort something.
Shay Elliott can be either very quiet or very busy and we won’t know till we arrive. People could arrange to meet in the Glendalough overflow car park at Laragh GAA pitch and travel on in full cars.
Make sure you have the mandatory kit with you.
See you all on Sunday morning
Liam VinesSep 29 2024, 8:15amMorning all..
It’s a crappy day out so full level C kit for today.
Don’t be afraid of or worried about the weather the short course will be 4 controls so even if you go out on the full course you can drop back to the short and get a race finish if things don’t go to plan..
Bring your own cup for after…
Andy KeelingSep 29 2024, 6:08pmNav challenge #2 . A challenge it was.
Remember that Simpsons episode where homer walked backwards into the hedge. Very like that at times. But face first. In the wind and rain. Massive thanks to Liam and crew.
I kind of knew this would be the swan song for my 5 year old paper east west map when I saw the forecast but gave it a go anyway. As it dissolved past legibility 3 hours in I knew my race was over. Perhaps self destructing dissolving maps could be a new method of cut off for the future? Your thoughts "Cut off Clancy"????? :p
Hot drinks and dogs were very much appreciated at the cosy finish gazebo party. Thank you Clare.
Utter madness really, what we choose to do of a Sunday :D. But great craic.
Paul MahonSep 30 2024, 11:16amWOW :-) !!!!!!
Body and mind still recovering from a memorable day out on the hills at Nav 2.
Hats off to Liam for all the cunning planning to give good route choices, tricky control sites and plenty of challenging terrain in less than 20k.
On a day when the forecast was terrible a big crowd set out into benign conditions and came back in dribs n drabs, generally quite damp and bedraggled but each with a story of woe to tell of elusive controls, Vietnam war type crawling under fallen trees, missing forests and leg sucking heather and ferns ;-)
The hint was there in the title as a proper "Challenge" it certainly was and the results will no doubt be testament to.

Thanks to Liam, Clare and all the volunteers who made it happen and duly fed and nourished us with Hot Dogs, Tae n Treats as we returned from the storm
Thomas RocheSep 30 2024, 11:37amThanks to Liam, Clare and the gang for a great event yesterday. So many highs and lows both in elevation and in spirits as CPs were found sometimes by experience and others by pure luck. Didn't get all the CPs but managed to survive a Liam Vines Nav Challenge;-). Ps- the hotdogs at the end were special :-D
Brian FarrenSep 30 2024, 12:05pmThanks Liam, Clare and the gang. Loved the format of the event ,the hot dogs, and the war stories.
Alan AylingSep 30 2024, 1:20pmWar stories is right Brian. The PTSD is real. Flashbacks of trying to get to that stream junction... And the Tussocks of Trauma, the Heather from Hell, the Blasted Bracken of Beelzebub
Liam VinesSep 30 2024, 9:41pm42 very brave souls is what you are. Adventurer’s is also what you are.
Hindsight is a great thing but just to share my feelings going home yesterday. With the forecast that was arriving at lunchtime yesterday I should have taken No6 off the list. BUT I didn’t. A small regret. I do hope the hotdogs and tea made up for the toughness of the day. I absolutely love the atmosphere around the Nav challenges and the after stories that make them just that bit different.
Alan if it makes you feel any better, I cursed myself into the ground as I made my way across that tufty ground to bring back in the kite from No5
Thanks to Joan and Soloman for volunteering my own two lads for helping out and thinking you are all mad and Clare for the help and the reassurance that it would be grand.
Thank you all for turning up. Its over to Joe now to wrap up the Nav Challenges for another year
Alice ClancyOct 3 2024, 10:16amA very belated thank you to Liam, Clare and the hardy team of volunteers who kept us ‘challenged’ and themselves entertained on Sunday! Have only just about recovered….that was a pretty epic nav challenge…with a delicious spread of food after ! So much thought went into it, thank you all!
Liam you’ve quite a penchant for elusive control points…I think this year’s no.9 outdoes last years ‘ball alley’gate….! I learnt a lot though (mostly about how not to mark up a map) and had a lot of fun, roll on NC 3!!
