Gavan Doherty | Sep 3 2014, 6:03pm | Hi all, Sorry for any inconvenience caused, but after representations from Tommy T (work) and Don Short (mountain bike orienteering - http://www.orienteering.ie/fixture/full?id=320), the date for the final race in the Nav Challenge series has been reinstated to SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH. The start/finish is the Glenmalure Lodge (https://www.google.ie/maps/@52.957377,-6.353617,17z), there is a short course (ideal for beginners) and a long course (you know who you are). Any of you who enjoyed the post-race banter in the sunshine outside the Gap pub last week, please pray for more of the same! More details to go up on imra.ie over the coming days, but initial details from BrÃan O'Meara (planner) as follows: Nav Challenge 3 will start and finish at the Glenmalure Lodge Inn. The race will start at 11 am, and there will be both Long and Short Course options available. There will be free route choice for both Short and Long Course. The Long Course is approx. 20 km, with approx. 1000m of height gain. The Short Course will be 8-10 km, with approx.400m of climbing. Long Course The course will cover a mixture of terrain including bog, dense woodland and open mountain, and is unsuitable for those that have little experience in navigation and unmarked open mountain runs. There will be seven controls which the runner must hit – the order is up to them. Short Course The Short course will be easier, covering much of the same terrain, and runners taking a direct route will cover approximately 8-10km, with around 400m of altitude gain through forest and open mountain–depending on route choice. This course will have four controls – the order in which to hit the controls is up to the runner. The winner should come in around the one-and-a-half hour mark. |
Kevin O'Riordan | Sep 3 2014, 6:06pm | Never knew it was moved in the first place... |
Paul Smyth | Sep 3 2014, 6:20pm | Yay!, now I can do both! |
Paul Smyth | Sep 3 2014, 6:22pm | Both the NAV and the MTBO that is! |
Maike Jürgens | Sep 3 2014, 6:48pm | haha, i can already see the race report ... dense woodland (=fairytale forest i want to explore), open mountain (ferns!!!) and bog (foul smelling - need something starting with f here). looking forward to it! |
BrÃan O'Meara | Sep 4 2014, 10:27am | Foul Smelling Fen is what you're looking for.. |
Alice Clancy | Sep 10 2014, 10:00pm | Sounds great! Anyone carpooling from Dublin to this race? Thanks! |
Gavan Doherty | Sep 11 2014, 12:13pm | Hi all, I think I have all the details for Sunday's Nav Challenge up on the Event page (https://www.imra.ie/events/view/id/1157/). Weather is looking promising. Any questions or missing information just post up here. |
BrÃan O'Meara | Sep 13 2014, 9:16pm | I've just finished putting the controls out for tomorrow. If the weather conditions are anything like today, Long Course runners should perhaps bring water and/or gels/food. It's a tough course, the optimum route being a little bit over 20km, and may take more than two hours for the winner to complete. The Short Course is a little over 10km, but all on trail. Might be worth short Course runners carrying some water also. Today was HOT up there. There is some isolated tree felling going on, but this doesn't impact much on the race route. The course design is reminiscent of some of Joe Lalor-run Nav Challenges of previous years, and the Guinness at the Glenmalure Inn is as good as always. Enjoy the race.. |
Gerard Cunningham | Sep 14 2014, 9:34pm | Thanks to the very professional team involved in running todays event. It had all the hallmarks of a classic navigation challenge - great organisation, scenery, weather and lots of variation on route choices. And thanks to the Glenmalure Inn - waiter service at the finish line is a hard act to follow. |
CaitlÃn Bent | Sep 14 2014, 11:20pm | You'v said it all Gerard. It never fails to be a happy ending when events finish at Glen Malure Lodge:) |
Anne Hodge | Sep 15 2014, 8:45am | Yes, great event brilliantly organised. Thanks Gavan, Brendan and everyone else involved! |
James H Cahill | Sep 15 2014, 10:17am | Thank you John, Don, Vivian, Brendan and Gavan for organising yesterday's outing in Glenmalure. Thank you Brian for a tough, challenging, soul destroying, mentally and physically damaging route. My 25.6km ciruit clearly bore no resemblance to the "little bit over 20km" referred to in the forum, or perhaps Brian's little bit is an "Irish" little bit. Great route, great day, great organisation. Thank you to everyone who gave up their time for our enjoyment. |
Richard Nunan | Sep 15 2014, 8:06pm | Thanks to Gavan Doherty for organising the Nav Challenge series again this year and to the Race directors(Gavan and Mick Hanney) and their volunteers helping to organise each of the 3 races. |

Sam Scriven | Sep 16 2014, 12:22am | What a fantastic conclusion to the Nav Series 2014. The cramps and scratches are already forgotten, and the sights, sounds and scents of autumn in Glenmalure will live long in the memory. Thanks a million to Gavan, Brian, John, Don, Brendan and all who made it what it was. Short report up. |
BrÃan O'Meara | Sep 17 2014, 8:59am | James - +/- 5 km counts as a 'little bit' (barely!) Has anyone got any garmin or strava links for their chosen route? |
James H Cahill | Sep 17 2014, 1:19pm | Here is my garmin for your amusement Brian. The course was great, my route choice was perhaps questionable http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=zowiyknhirswepuz |
James Curran | Sep 17 2014, 2:43pm | Thanks a million to everyone who organised the event, it was great. Don could I be put down for a short course finish rather than a long course DNF? |
Donnchadh Cullinan | Sep 17 2014, 8:18pm | Any chance someone could put up the coordinates of the check points for the long course - missed Sunday but would like a crack at it. Thx |
Rob O'Neill | Sep 18 2014, 9:57am | Hi Donnchadh - You can view the map in B&W at: https://imageshack.com/i/ipslqODXp |
Donnchadh Cullinan | Sep 18 2014, 9:08pm | Many Thanks Rob - Looks like fun!! |
John Condon | Sep 18 2014, 11:35pm | ....and hell. |
Regina Kelly | Sep 19 2014, 11:34am | http://attackpoint.org/sessiondata.jsp?sessionid=3924561 is my route. turned out to be around 25km give or take. Enjoyable race for the most part. Had to do it the wrong way around to get the cut off time and also stupidly went cross country for 247. Bit of a wobble where I considered whether I wanted to go around the extra hill or stay on the path. |
James H Cahill | Sep 29 2014, 10:39pm | All the talk of base points, race points and enduro points on another thread prompted me to look at the results of this race. They are not up on the system yet and I was wondering if they are going to be put up in order that competitors in this league can judge their overall success (or failure) against the field over the course of the league. |
Maike Jürgens | Oct 2 2014, 7:53pm | thanks for putting up the results. better late than never, race report up. thanks to everyone for making the race possible and for making sure i was ok at the finish. |
