- Organisers Instructions:
- Start/finish at Barravore in the Glenmalure Valley. Park in the Barravore carpark and the start/finish will be just beyond the ford on the way to the hostel.
Bring your own copy of the latest Lug and Glendo map from EastWest Mapping. Anyone using an older or different map will be at a significant disadvantage. The list of controls will be handed out at the start. A master map will be made available 5 minutes later for anyone wishing to check the locations, and "hints" can be provided at that time if desired. There will be two courses: Long and "Easier". The "Easier" course will suit beginner navigators and is approx. 10k. (though the more 'interesting' the route, the shorter it gets!). It is roughly 2/3 trail and 1/3 open mountain. The Long is approx. 15k-20k with roughly 1/3 trail and 2/3 open mountain. Finishing times are significantly longer than most 'normal' races so bringing food and water is recommended. Controls are generally in easy to find locations and choosing the optimum route between them is where the challenge lies! On both courses there are plenty of opportunities to shorten or extend the route depending on how much value you want to get out of your race entry!
Courses close 1500. All competitors must be off the hill by then.
In line with IMRA's junior policy, this race is not suitable for juniors so please do not enter.
The event takes place on open mountain with very little shelter. Please come appropriately attired and equipped. WARNING: there are dangerous cliffs and steep ground in the area which for your own safety are strictly OUT OF BOUNDS. The courses have been designed to avoid such areas but please take care.. Anyone traversing such areas will receive a DNF result.
As this is a naviational challenge, it is forbidden to use GPS or any other electronic navigational aids. However, if you get badly lost you are more than welcome to use GPS provided you declare it at the finish line. You will be credited with a 'non-competitive' result. - Prizegiving Location:
- At the finish. A smorgasbord of refreshments will be provided. Bring your own cup!
Volunteers (Non-Running)
You need to have done 2 non-running volunteer roles in a calendar year to qualify for end of year prize
Volunteers (Running)
Check with race director if they have a need for people volunteering and running. Race directors need a minimum number of people available throughout the race to make the race work so non-running volunteers are preferable. While it can be helpful, volunteering in a volunteer and race capacity does not count towards qualifying for end of year prize
