Route Description:

The Nagles Trail:- A point to point race from Ballyhooly to Killavullen across the Nagles mountains Start at the entrance to Castleblagh woods just south of Ballyhooly Bridge. Follow the Blackwater way signs for the first 2kms along gentle forest roads. The Blackwater way leads us through a farm yard and a small section of single track in a wood. After this we leave the Blackwater way and turn left. We continue through woodland with the track gradually getting narrower. Next we have a 600m small section of natural woodland that the organisers have created a path through, footwear with grip would help with this section. From this we emerge into the main forest. The intial fire road is rough but it improves after a km. from there we continue climbing, turning right at a T-junction. From there we run as far as a forest barrier, duck under and turn immediately left onto the rough stony ascent to Knocknaskagh. From here we cross the remaining open mountain area, descending along a sweeping fireroad. We cross the road that bisects the nagles and start the final climb up to the masts on Corran Hill. Make sure you touch the metal fence at the masts. Then enjoy the final descent to the finish. History:- This is a route created by Donal Burke, the original race was run several times in the 1980s. It used finish at the Castle inn in Ballyhooley but unfortunately this is no more so we've reversed the route to finish near Killavullen.

Getting There:

Parking will be available in the large Forest Car Park at Glenagaar W 641 970. this is just South of Killavullen Village. From the north (Fermoy or Limerick) head to Mallow, Take the N72 to Killavullen, cross the bridge and keep left when the road forks at a church. continue on for 3km until you see the car park on the right. From Cork:- after rathduff take the first right signposted Bottlehill. take the 2nd road on the left signposted killavullen and continue for 10km until you see the carpark on left.

Volunteers (Running)

Check with race director if they have a need for people volunteering and running. Race directors need a minimum number of people available throughout the race to make the race work so non-running volunteers are preferable. While it can be helpful, volunteering in a volunteer and race capacity does not count towards qualifying for end of year prize
